Remote Monitoring

Families with loved ones who are facing challenges with age or a disability are often torn between two concerns; safety and independence. Seniors and people with a disability want to remain in the comfort of their own home to avoid expensive and intrusive care. At the same time, families are concerned their loved ones will not be able to alert the right people should a need arise. Remote Monitoring supports provide solutions to these concerns and help maintain independence for the person.

Home Automation

Home automation for healthcare can range from very simple switches to lavish computer controlled network interfaces. Home automation is being implemented into more and more homes of older adults and people with a disability in order to maintain their independence and safety instead of moving to a costly health care facility or being forced to live with roommates whom they have little in common. For people with a disability, smart homes give them opportunity for independence, which will help them gain confidence and determination.

This field uses much of the same technology and equipment as home automation for security, entertainment, and energy conservation but tailors it towards older adults and people with a disability. Many people think about accessibility technology for the homes of disabled or frail elderly people they get about as far as thinking of stair lifts and easy access showers or baths, a few handrails and moving the position of light switches. But with today's technology the possibilities are endless.

Smart homes offer the opportunity for people with disabilities to live more independently, allowing them to take control of their own environment. It included lights, fans, blinds, doors, thermostats, electrical sockets and more that residents can operate with their voice or tablet computer.

Daily Living

Difficulty or inability to perform activities due to illness, injury, or impairments in function often results in a person's loss of independence and control of their environment. Consequently, this impacts participation in life tasks, work, and quality of life. Electronic aids to daily living (EADLs) assist persons with independence, performance of daily activities, and their ability to live meaningful lives. They provide alternative tools to operate and control electronic devices. They are used for everyday activities such as turning lights on and off, changing the television channels, playing music, opening and closing doors, and making phone calls. Individuals of all ages with a wide range of disabilities use EADLs to increase participation and independence in performing daily tasks.
